Scarborough Athletic are pleased to be in the position of recruiting for the exciting new role of club Marketing and Commercial Officer to support the Board, who are responsible for the overall governance and strategic direction of Scarborough Athletic FC Society Limited.

This part-time role, at the heart of the football club, would be perfect for a self-motivated, enthusiastic individual with an interest in working in a sales and marketing role within the local community. This position will be primarily home-based; however the post-holder will also be required to regularly work from the club’s bases at both the Scarborough Sports Village and the Filey Training Ground facility and will include weekend hours depending on club fixtures.

 

Main Responsibilities

The SAFC Marketing and Commercial Officer has direct responsibility to the Chairman and Board for Marketing and Commercial activity within the club. The post-holder will act as the named and recognised point of contact for Partners, Sponsors, Customers and any other relevant stakeholders commensurate with their responsibilities.

The post-holder will be expected to coordinate and oversee the full range of Marketing and Commercial activities at the club and promote a positive and trusting relationship between the Society and relevant stakeholders. Due to the potentially broad nature of activities it is anticipated that volunteers, staff, including the Operations Officer and other Directors will support the Marketing and Commercial Officer as and when required.

 

Main Duties

  • Strategy & Action planning: Develop a coordinated Strategy and Action plan, which will ensure the club delivers maximum revenues from all new and existing clients, and delivers a return on any investment. Produce updated reports to the Board to measure the performance in each area.

  • Marketing: Promote commercial activities of the club and other commercial and marketing  messages, as required.

  • Negotiation: Acquire an understanding of sports sponsorship and the benefits of what and how it can deliver for our prospective partners and stakeholders. Build up and demonstrate experience of negotiating contracts locally, regionally and nationally including team, match and ball sponsors.

  • Selling: Sell perimeter boards and similar mediums, programme advertising, match day sponsorships and exploit other opportunities and propositions, aiming to boost income with current advertisers as well as securing new business. Match or increase income from player sponsorships and work with the Operations Officer to maximise ticket income.

  • Revenue Realisation: Ensure payments are collected and processed through the relevant systems and that progress is reported to the Board in relation to KPI targets and budgets on a regular basis.

  • Cost control: Ensure that commercial revenues and the associated expenses are managed to generate a pre-agreed financial return. Produce updated reports to the Board to measure the performance in each area in relation to KPI targets and budgets.

  • Relationship management: Forge links with existing and prospective new businesses at the local, regional, and national level, staying in regular contact with sponsors and advertisers, liaising with visiting sponsors and arranging suitable levels of hospitality for them.

  • Merchandise: Assist negotiation with merchandise suppliers; agree costs, order numbers and retail prices; purchase stock for the club shop and other retail outlets.  Develop merchandise marketing and retail strategies and also assist with ordering of club kits for each of the club’s teams.

  • E-Commerce: Work with the Communications Director to advise the Board on all e-commerce opportunities, software platforms, internet presence, media and broadcast that might offer marketing, promotional and PR possibilities designed to increase the Club’s customer base and increase revenue. This includes development of, and providing written content to, the website and Social Media platforms to help achieve the club’s goals and Brand activities including digital campaigns.

  • Stakeholders: Work with stakeholder groups to identify key selling messages including the use of Market Research. Work closely with other committees to create a ‘case’ covering all required key messages; the key rules are always to deliver what we promise and never to over promise. Oversee the general interests of Sponsors, Advertisers of the Club, and suppliers of Merchandise.

  • Performing other such reasonable duties as may be prescribed by the Board from time to time.

  • Assist and work with the Operations Officer to achieve the overall goals of the Club and its Board.

  • Attend Board meetings and any relevant sub-group meetings as required.



 

Accountability

The post holder will be accountable to the Chairman and Board of Scarborough Athletic Football Club. A Commercial Director will act as their line manager in relation to their overall performance or any disputes or problems which may arise

 

Person Specification

Essential 

  • A firm understanding of and commitment to the Society/Club’s community and not-for-profit purpose (ethos and integrity)

  • Experience in client relationship management, seeking and obtaining new commercial relationships and/or experience of working in a sales and marketing environment

  • Full, valid driver’s licence and ability to travel to perform duties as required

  • Ability to coordinate events and promotional materials with minimal supervision (initiative, creativity, and organisational skills)

  • A professional “can-do” attitude with flexibility and ability to work to meet a deadline

  • A desire to seek solutions and the ability to successfully use initiative

  • Ability to deal confidently with a wide range of people e.g partners, customers, contractors and colleagues (inter-personal skills and teamwork)

  • Strong administrative and financial management skills

  • Excellent communication and negotiating skills 

  • Strong literacy skills and attention to detail to ensure accuracy of communications

  • Strong relevant IT skills including office and business software and creation of reports

  • A high degree of integrity and appreciation of / adherence to confidentiality

  • Reliability and  responsibility for ensuring a high quality of work

  • Creative thinker

 

Desirable

  • Strong track record in similar roles

  • Team / volunteer organisation experience

 

Salary & Conditions

  • Around 20 hours per week flexible to include working some weekends and evenings to meet the first team’s home match fixtures at The Flamingo Land Stadium (Scarborough Sports Village)
