Steve Kittrick: "It was a great occasion"

Scarborough Athletic manager Steve Kittrick praised the support for his side as part of the opening game at the new Flamingo Land Stadium. Despite the game finishing in a 4-1 defeat for his side against a Sheffield United XI, the Boro boss has got high hopes for the new season.

He said: "It’s been all about the occasion of playing back home, I’ve got to say thank you to all the supporters who came along to see our first game back in town to support us.

"Our aim is to get out of this league this year and we’ll be putting the hard work in before the season starts to try and make that possible by the end of April 2018. We’ve set ourselves the target of going up and the pressure is on because we’ll have the expectations of a big home support this season but there’s no reason why we can’t be right up there."

The home fans were able to cheer the opening Scarborough Athletic goal at the new ground as Jimmy Beadle fired into the roof of the net just before half-time. The Boro boss did have to dispute with the midfielder over his claim though.

"Jimmy came into the dressing room saying “I’ve scored the first goal” but I said not in a Scarborough shirt you haven’t because Matty scored an own goal early on! We had a bit of banter with that but Jimmy’s come in and lost some weight and looked good for us today."

Kittrick was impressed with the opposition from the Blades, but believes if his squad can improve their fitness, then they will be ready for that opening league game on 12 August.

"I’ve known John Dungworth at Sheffield United for many years, he’s always been around good young players and I knew it was going to be difficult today. They were very organised and quick to close us down, but we changed things at half-time to go three in the middle of midfield that I thought gave us some joy.

"It’s all about fitness now for us and building that up for the first game of the season on 12 August. It’s little steps for us to get ready for that first league match against Hyde United."
