Boro start preparations for new season with retained quartet

Scarborough Athletic are pleased to announce the first set of retained players for the 2017/18 season.

After an excellent 3rd placed finish in the Evo-Stik First Division North last season, Boro boss Steve Kittrick has been working hard since the campaign ended to secure the services of the squad that finished the season so strongly.

Agreeing terms for the first season back home so far are defenders Dave Merris and Matty Turnbull plus midfielders James Cadman and Jamie Price.

Dave Merris was an ever present for the club during last season, leading by example as captain with consistent displays at left-back to keep the Boro defence secure at the back. The Manager’s Player of the Year 2016/17 award winner will be back with the club to try and go one better next season at the new ground.

Central midfielder James Cadman impressed during his short time at the club after joining in late February, before a hamstring injury finished his season prematurely. Despite his injury setback, Cadman’s energy and creativity in the middle of the park will be a big asset for Steve Kittrick next season.

Matty Turnbull became a key part of the Boro defence after joining from Pickering Town in November 2016. Matty has raised his game to a higher level and slotted firmly into the centre of defence, whilst also proving a dangerous threat from set-pieces.

Another player confirmed as staying at the club for next season is Jamie Price. Price has proved adept both in midfield or defence and has marshalled some of his younger team mates through difficult spells when required. Jamie’s experience will be key next season to give Boro the edge in tight games.

Boro boss Steve Kittrick has confirmed that one player not staying with the club next season will be centre-half Dominic Roma

Roma joined the club in mid-February and played a major role in steering the club into the play-offs with his tough tackling and organisation of the defenders around him. Dom put everything into his stay at Scarborough Athletic and we would like to thank him for the part he played in turning our defensive record around to surge into the play-off places.

Commenting on his departure, Kittrick said: "Dom did a great job for us last season, coming in at a crucial point in the season to really help us at the back. We wish him well at his new club in the Evo-Stik South and thank him for all his efforts in a Scarborough Athletic shirt."

Steve will continue to talk to players old and new over the coming weeks as he builds his squad for next season, with the first game back in town just two months away in a sell out friendly against a Sheffield United XI.

Kittrick said: "I think it's important that we retain the players we want from last season, there's a few on holiday at the moment, but they've all been invited back. We'll sit down with the lads over the next few weeks to try and agree terms with them.

"I'm also speaking to four or five other players about joining us, but it's a merry-go-round at the moment just like last season.

"It's good to get some of the lads in place early, but it'll settle down over the next few weeks as we get organised for next year."

The evening gave players and management the chance to have a look around the new Scarborough Sports Village, with Kittrick impressed with the new base.

"It's fantastic! Once the place gets rocking and rolling we'll see smiles on people's faces who've been Scarborough fans from day one. It's massive for the club to bring a different atmosphere on matchdays, together with an excellent playing surface and the facilities that go with it, you can't ask for much more!"
